Acupuncture for Weight Loss

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) views weight gain as an energetic imbalance within the body that can be rebalanced, and thus, promote greater harmony and energy within the body’s organ systems, and thus, weight loss.

When energy levels are improved, and when the digestive system is re-energized through acupuncture treatments, symptoms such as fatigue, slow metabolism, water retention, bloating, loose stools, and a feeling of heaviness start to go away. As each person starts to feel relief from these symptoms, your body starts to better process what you eat, and your opportunity to lose weight improves. In addition, acupuncture works to balance one’s emotions around eating (emotional eating) and provides deep relaxation that can assist at reducing cravings and compulsive eating.

Acupuncture is most effective when used in conjunction with dietary changes, increased exercise or movement, and a change in one’s lifestyle that supports these two changes.

Recent Research

Recent Research shows that acupuncture can effectively assist with weight loss.

  • One such study showed that participants receiving acupuncture lost more than three times more weight than the group that did not receive acupuncture.
  • Another study showed that participants receiving electro-stimulation on acupuncture points reported appetite suppression. With the increased suppression of one’s appetite, the results showed that the acupuncture group was more likely to experience a reduced appetite and was more likely to lose weight than the control group.

How does acupuncture work to assist with weight loss?

Acupuncture is successful; because acupuncture needles, when inserted into specific points on the body and in the ear release endorphins. These endorphins have a calming and relaxing effect that makes it easier to deal with the stress and anxiety that may trigger overeating and bingeing on foods that are counterproductive to good health. The secretion of endorphins are also beneficial as they affect the digestive and hormonal systems so acupuncture can help rebalance the organ systems to improved metabolism and will power.

Your Acupuncture Treatment

I will engage in conversation with you regarding your current diet and eating habits, your level of physical activity, and the constructive ways in which you can changes in those two areas.

I will choose the best acupuncture points for you, based on questions that you answer regarding such concerns as stress levels, quality of sleep, digestion and elimination. You should share with me any medical diagnoses that your health care provider(s) have determined. I will then check your pulse to discern the general state of your energy. I will then check your tongue for its color, to see if you have any cracks in it, peeling or puffiness. I will be certain to tell you what I see.

What acupuncture points will I use?

Based on my Traditional Chinese Medicine Diagnosis, I will create a treatment protocol using a combination of ear and body points. The points that I use will assist with many of the following physical and emotional issues surrounding weight gain.

I will also use ear (auricular points) for weight loss during your acupuncture treatment. After taking those needles out at the end of your treatment, I may place small “tacks” or needle points held in place with medical adhesive tape in our ears to wear home. These seed-sized beads or magnets are placed at the same location as the needles were, to enhance energetic stimulation and to continue the effects of the treatment for up to 5 days after it.

The Treatment Plan: How many treatments will I need?

The number of acupuncture treatments necessary depends on the patient's goals for losing weight, including how quickly they want to lose it, and their commitment to keeping the weight off. To lose between five to ten pounds, one treatment once a week for four weeks is appropriate until they reach their goal, and then a booster treatment once every two weeks is optimal for several months. After a few treatments, the patient and practitioner will mutually decide how often to meet to maintain the client’s weight loss.

Nutritional Counseling and Lifestyle Changes

I will assist you with diet changes that you can live with and maintain long term. In general, a diet that is higher in protein and fiber and low in carbohydrates is most effective for long term weight loss and to maintain your weight once your ideal weight is achieved.

Moderate exercise or movement is recommended. Many forms of physical activity include: all sports, running, yoga, tai chi or qi gong. Meditation can also help with calming the mind to reduce anxiety and stress to assist with weight loss. Moderate weight training can also be incorporated, as it builds lean body mass and helps to reduce body fat.
