Acupuncture for Pregnancy and Childbirth

Acupuncture is beneficial to women at all stages of pregnancy, with women coming for treatment most often during the first and third trimesters of their pregnancy. Acupuncture provides drug-free relief of many common pregnancy-related symptoms.

The first trimester of pregnancy, weeks 1 through 13, is the most fragile for a pregnant woman. Women need both energetic and hormonal support during the first trimester to support the strength of the pregnancy, and to avoid miscarriage. Chinese herbs can also successfully support women duirng this time to strengthen her pregnancy, I am able to support each woman in choosing a safe and effective formula for her to take during this time.

Women may continue acupuncture during the second trimester to build energy, improve sleep and improve their appetites, and to assist babies that are growing slowly to gain weight.

In the third trimester, acupuncture is beneficial for reducing swelling in the hands and feet, improving energy levels, assisting babies in being in optimal position for birth, turning breech babies and to gently and safely induce labor. Women also come for acupuncture during their third trimester to prepare their bodies for labor. Women come for weekly treatments starting at week 35 to promote optimal energy and stamina prior to labor. Statistically, women who come for prebith acupuncture have a reduced rate of labor induction, a reduction in the use of an epidural, and a reduction in the rate of cesarean section (C-section delivery).
